Crumpled Papers

Crumpled Papers

A Poem by Colby

Crumpled papers in a corner

Inkless pens tossed against the wall

His hat hits the floor

His fingers drag through his hair

Eyes shut

Back hunched

He slams the notebook on the desk

and screams in frustration

Resigned he picks up the pen and begins to write

Words flow

Emotions fly across the pages

The fireplace dims as hours go by

Light fades

Still the pen flows

Long into the night

without food

without water

without company

He finds his focus

Unable to stop

As the morning light slips through the drapes

he sits back

Satisfied

He stands and stokes the fire

Pulls open the curtains

and with a smile soaks in the sun

Pleased

he walks back to his desk

Straightens his papers

and throws them in the fire

He leaves his words to burn

As he opens the door to the world

I think this is my favorite so far, for the detail, the story it contains and the powerful, hopeful message. Your writing is fun to read because of how your moment by moment details move your story forward, bringing the reader into the story as if we are a witness to the events. And again, I love the ending.

There's nothing better than writing late at night. You might want to capitalize the start of all of the lines unless that was intentional. Great imagery and the kind of ending that I never can get enough of.
