Disposable Income

Disposable Income

A Poem by Colorado Brian
"

Politicians treat soldiers as if they are Disposable Income

"
A soldier lost his limbs in war
A soldier lost his life
The Politician says he cares
Says, "It cuts me like a knife"

Then he cuts the funding for
The Disabled Veterans Care
Says, "We just can't afford it"
Ain't no money any where

Then he starts another war
In another foreign land
Says we must deploy more troops
Don't you understand?

We always have the funding for
Yet another foreign war
The politicians start a fight
Send the troops to settle the score

They don't see troops as human beings
Well, Soldiers have a soul
Politicians chase material things
Profiteering is their goal

He gives no thought to the Trail of Tears
His wars have left behind
He gives a speech and feeds on fears
For more profits he can find

He's lost his limbs he's lost his life
Came home with a broken body
Suffering turmoil, mental strife
And health care that is shoddy

The politician never looks behind
He always looks ahead
Never pause to take a count
How many soldiers dead

It's up to You it's up to Me
To force a call for Action
Take care of those who went overseas
They deserve some satisfaction

Next time we're told to go to war
Civilians must say No
Tell the profiteering politician
It's your damn turn to Go

The plight and the sin are inextricably linked and the poems narrative is clear and concise. Over here, the Gurkas, who have fought on the side of the British for over 200 years, were only finally allowed to settle in the UK in 2009, and that was only after an extended battle with the politicians who had denied them this right for decades. That last line ought to be not just a suggestion, but a law. That'd make 'em think more than twice.

Rather than mixing the narrative between the Soldier and the Politicians, I wonder if I should have divided this poem into two halves. First, the plight of the Soldier, then second, the Sins of the Politician. It might be confusing the way I wrote it, going back and forth between the two.
