The Saddest Love Stories

The Saddest Love Stories

A Poem by Cass Ashe

A glance across a room from unsuspecting eyes
and just as quick they dart from onlookers
as if the sun were about to hurt all sight
when all the sun wants is to lighten a world
or two.

Never again peered they in each other's space
with both presently aware of such occurrences,
but stole a peek and saw the back of a head,
a cheekbone and an ear, but never saw
the eyes.

That small slight of sight could shape a new
story of a pair star-crossed as they
and a coincidence of something like a fallen book
that could spur about beautiful tales but only if
they meet.

Unlikely though it may be for two as such,
they bound through the brash berates of
stone cold whispers among the inward voices
who seek to wrench apart the two who might think
to love.

A last plea for a blessing from whatever's beyond,
for Aphrodite's armor to ardently find affection
and the culprit to be cursed Cupid's condemnation
because the saddest love stories are the ones that
never happen.
