The lad asked

"Sir can I have two weeks off"

Why do you want two weeks off

The whole class called out "Tell him"

"The training officer says I have to ask your permission to miss class"

The whole class called out "Tell him"

 

"I want to go to France"

The whole class called out "Tell him"

 

Why do you want to go to France

The whole class called out "Tell him"

 

"To play rugby"

The whole class called out "Tell him"

 

Play Rugby ?

The whole class called out "Tell him"

 

Who do you play for?

The whole class called out "Tell him"

 

"I have been picked for the Great Britain under eighteens"

"Why didnt you say earlier ?

"Dont know - I didnt like to"

 

"All right you can go; but take your books with you"

The whole class called out "Aw sir"

"you can read them if your get bored -

You can get all the notes from the others -

When you get back -

Go and have a good time -

We cant stand it the way of your international career can we"

The whole class cheered and called out

"Sir your a gooden"

Take your books _ and read them IF YOU GET BORED - not much chance of that 17 year olds away from home - possibly the first time - dont think he would pick up the books;

He was a clever lad and a bit of a character ( he would be classed as a ' Tyke ' in Yorkshire dialect )

Wonderful!

Such fine writing , repeated phrase 'Tell him' is a smile a second. The final stanza really is a humdinger.' True or not, reads more than plausible. I felt like cheering too.

I was teaching their trade > one lad saw me after he had left me & said he used my notes to help him at work and had just got a job in the training school (BNFL)
