Alien Attack

          The Russians are coming!

              The Russians are coming!

 

 

Currently,

I am pretending

        to be myself.

No-one seems

to have quite caught on.

 

Watch me closely.

I know

how and when

               to smile,

although not necessarily why.

 

Of course,

I have had years

            of practice.

I have done my homework.

I really am “Da Bomb.”

 

The trick

is not to overdo

the subtle sidelong glance

               (never force the issue).

Shhh... I make no sudden moves.

 

Rhetorical questions,

emotional outbursts,

unbridled pulse-pounding passion,

all figments of a former imagination

sadly not in my present repertoire.

 

Were I a terrorist

           or Spy-vs.-Spy

you would all be dead by now

But not to worry

            I am merely...  not myself

What a class act, this is a brilliantly ironic take on the mask we sometimes must wear but feel alien to ourselves on the inside for whatever personal or external reasons. This has been a highlight of my reading evening.
