Fast Lane

Fast Lane

A Poem by Cyntax

Driver seat, fast lane.... all I hear is "Vroom!"
Tires screech, rubber burns... my life speeds toward doom.
Yet I don't make a U-Turn. Don't apply the brake.
Been driving speed limit since birth, for goodness sake.

Do I crave death or the wind that hits my face?
Perhaps a bit of both in this eternal race.
No other cars are driving, but my competition's high,
The cops are not in sight, so I have some time to buy.

Slam my foot to the metal - now we're in triple digits.
I wish I'd tap the brake, but I'm pushing toward infinite.
The glass cracks on the window, for the pressure is too fast,
Rear tire blows. "E" flashes on the dash for gas.

My car comes to a violent stop. I step out and reflect.
Dust off my pants and look around. I never broke a sweat.

Not a soul around as I dance to midnight's beat.
I'll satisfy my need for speed. Continue with my feet.

There's certainly no attempt to stop and smell the roses in this rush of words and emotions!

But then. to each his or own spiri. The speed merchant who feels more alert, more alive, when flying the tarmac, mindful of danger but ignoring it so as to buzz the heart a little or more faster! And then.. then there's the heel to toe wanderer. He or she who live their lives absorbing what is around their bodies rather than what's inside; No rights or wrongs.

You fly if that's where you feel alive.. for me, it would be dry climbing.

yes .... this speaks to me on many levels, I quite often do things out of the norm just for the experience of it all, then later I ask myself why... it's just my make-up... I learn by doing and always take time for reflection.... there's just something about pushing the boundaries that makes us know we are truly living ...

I like your writing style - glad to find you x x

I so love this, it really resonates with me, my friend, on the Road of life, we are, and we are each others fuel, until we must run and are out of it ;-)
Fantastic write...

Thanks, Ray! Much appreciated.
i like how the speaker continues with his feet...

the need to hurry through life? could it be we afraid to decelerate because we think we won't like the scenery and we feel the need to just keep speeding toward some destination just to get there?
the beauty is in the journey...this reminds me of a modern day version of Emily Dickinson's "because i could not stop for death"

great use of metaphor.

Thank you, Sir! Appreciate the compliments and your thoughts, as always.
I love the metaphor. Sometimes we could all use a little speed, other times that could be dangerous. Very nicely penned G!

Thank you, Q! Appreciate the review, as always.
Well who in their right minds wants to drive in the 'slow' lane after this zooming read. This was over too fast for my liking, G. ;-) LOL. Honestly, it was amazing, could be a song, a rap maybe.... I would do my beatboxing thing but I might kill you, LMAO.

Lol - would love to hear it! Thanks for checking it out, noodle - always appreciate your feedback.
I love the rhythm and flow of this poem. Sounds like it could be a rap. Very groovy, the way i read it. I also like the words you've used, creates amazing imagery for us- the readers. Inspiring, gives me a little need for speed too ;)
Great job :)

Love this metaphor, G. Superb rhyme and rhythm tell this tale of living fast, but living proud. Great read!

Thanks, Rita! Happy you enjoyed the trip with me.
I'm not sure how interested you are in the group Kiss, but this piece instantly put me in mind of Detroit Rock City...that need for speed, the adrenaline...perhaps it's a metaphor for life and aging, I saw it in that light as well. Either way, your words, rhyme, and flow perfectly reflect the pace of this piece inherent in the theme. I thought the ending was perfect as well...the notion of the speaker continuing on feet provides a measure of hope, even optimism...your words definitely drove me through many mindsets and many of the elements that make this character tick...I enjoyed this one very much G, great work :)
