The Returner Of Time

The Returner Of Time

A Poem by Cyprian Van Dyke

Red 57 Chevy, smooth as porcelain, nothing crockery,

Its length & width is like a bed to the one sitting in it

& its low beams glow like dreams in the city.

A young man in a sharp suit took a flight in a Delorean.

He’s here, thanks to someone that isn’t yet born.

A young lady in a dress, that shows her long legs and high heels,

opens her door to him, & sees his 57 Chevy parked by her curve.

In The Still Of The Night by The Platters play on the Chevy radio

On the way to the dance. She watches houses pass her window.

He opens her door. Takes her left hand, with the orchid corsage.

She gets out the 57 Chevy with the smile his kiss put on her face.

As they walk into prom, flashbacks take his breath away.

His name tag should read Marty Mcfly,

But then it shouldn’t, at the same time.

The band that plays shouldn’t have interruptions.

& shouldn't play music from future generations.

There shouldn’t be a fight outside by a 57 Chevy

unless he’s fighting for the woman that he loves.

The music changes like the weather & people move differently,

From running to jumping, hugging to swinging, fast to slow dancing.

The taste of fruit punch is on their lips

At the Enchantment Under The Sea.

He walks her through two doors & then they leave.

She holds his hand & sits by him with a smile on her face.

He walks her from door to door. Only she knows his name.

He gives her the keys to his 57 Chevy.

She touches his lips with hers, in front of all window watchers.

They say their goodbyes as they return,

not to their lives, but their own times.

Well, I enjoyed reading you poem. I was a bit confused (still am!).D id they come from different times? Did she buy the 57 Chevy? But I like the ambiguity. There are some good word pictures and I like the flashback bit.
