Wings

Wings

A Poem by Damien Ridge
"

A story of self, a song for me.

"

A star in the night with darkness surrounding
It's hard to pronounce right, it keeps coming out wrong
Believe the inner child when it speaks, seek
Breathe deep when you reach peace, leap
It's not a ledge, it's an airstrip
But you said in your head that you can't bare it
Who cares if you can't stand it, you cherish your fam's hand
Just stand clear of the landing
Stampede in to battle
Retreat, enemies leave and their battered
At least defeat each of your bad thoughts
That's not a big reach, take the ladder
Man up, no just be who you are now
With a reason to keep speaking, go talk now
Walk farther than fathers of fathers, daughters of mothers
Brothers of daughters and daughter's of brothers
Got caught up in living everyday like it was my last
It would never change, just patterns
Ever rearranging, how to put the things in place that matter
Just madness
How could this happen, act quick, magic
Cast it, establish any single way I can manage to grab it
I'm just barely able to grasp it
Unstable, unmanaged
Capable of only what I'm focused on
If hope is gone, I'm holding on the rope
Slowly going down the only route I know
Those that know me know I sold my soul for the sickness
It's sickening, I said I'm sinking
In a sea full of symphonies
Memories of melodies, so mellow and deep
Send me to a heaven so free, regret is no thing
I'm better if me is bettering me
In bed with the feeling of set in a dream
I'm set to release

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
My wings unfold, they take me high
I'd keep you warm and cold at the same time
Fly
Wind on our face, scenery amazing
Breathtaking, but wait, seem to be escaping
Just save me from taking another pill
Or a way to remain sane, am I crazy?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's like I open up a door
Standing in the frame I look at what's before me
I'm sorry if I never look back at the past after the fact
Casting a shadow at that
There's an illumination that saved me
Sick of playing all the games
I bet you're sick of saying the same things
Kid complaining there for days
I'm containing all my anger and saving it for a way out
Of a state where I'm in danger and dangling by a thread count
Need strength now
Everything it takes now
Not escape, let's make every single face proud
In the way are mistakes, never break down
On another train, am I crazy or sane?
How do I spread these broken wings
I've reached the ceiling and the room is squeezing me
I need the freedom and I need the room to breathe
I can see the sea underneath the moon
This kingdom
Got caught up in living everyday like it was my last
It would never change, just patterns
Ever rearranging, how to put the things in place that matter
Just madness
How could this happen, act quick, magic
Cast it, establish any single way I can manage to grab it
I'm just barely able to grasp it
Unstable, unmanaged
Capable of only what I'm focused on
If hope is gone, I'm holding on the rope
Slowly going down the only route I know
Those that know me know I sold my soul for the sickness
It's sickening, I said I'm sinking
In a sea full of symphonies
Memories of melodies, so mellow and deep
Send me to a heaven so free, regret is no thing
I'm better if me is bettering me
In bed with the feeling of set in a dream
I'm set to release

This is absolutely breathtaking for me. When I first started reading the lyrics, I noticed each word was written with care and meaning, however when I came upon, "Got caught up in living everyday like it was my last," I was hooked. The meaning of this song is beautifully written. I also would like to point out I love how you play with your words and integrate sound devices. Beautiful!

What I think is that that must be what it's like to be looking out the window of an insane asylum ... or drug rehab. Very powerful.

Exactly, both in a way. Thank you!
Very interesting lyrics... Great Guitar solo.. The song is little fast for me but when you hear it with the lyrics in front of you, it sounds great. Good work Damien..

Your music brings the poem alive with great feeling, although I'm not much for rap. But this poem is done with great taste and the words have such deep feelings to them;-} Wonderfully expressed.

From a purely technical point of view, this is amazing. I love all the writing techniques you use. You are especially good at alliteration. As for the music, I really liked the melancholy syncopated rhythm behind the lyrics. I am no expert on music genres but it felt like R&B, very nice.

Glad you enjoyed it! Thinking I need to be doing more acoustics... Thanks for checking it out!
Very impressive. Powerful words, strong message. I believe you playing it live added much depth and your tone allowed me to "feel" rather than just read. Great job!

Wow. There are so many levels and meanings in your lyrics, and in your delivery. We’re all overwhelmed by the swirl of madness in the world and can relate on that level with your themes. But, the personal levels… the marginalized struggling for voice and equity in our society… people working through loss… those who find themselves in isolation… those with mental health issues clinging to hope and sanity… Your lyrics speak to all the struggle and confusion in life.

How’d you do that?

You’re welcome. And thank you for your eloquence.
Admittedly, I rarely click on videos--a strange quirk of mine I know lol. This time I bit the bullet" and was not for one of the first times in my life-- disappointed. Your rhythm was great, and as a writer I was listening to the lyrics. Words are powerful when they are arranged just so. I'm no expert but I enjoyed the points you chose to inflect on, as well as the upbeat tempo. I'm a sucker for tempo. I tend to get bored easily but I actually listened through the whole thing!! Your words wielded a strange potency that declared you "get it." A strong message with depth and meaning you write and sing. It's nice to see another writer reflecting in such a way that it captures and inspires. I'm only slightly jealous that you can sing like that--only slightly lol *winks* brava lyrical minstrel ;)
