The Pain of Patience

The Pain of Patience

A Poem by Dan Cowan

Oh, in the solitude of night
my heart is a flaming stone
aching, groaning, screaming
craving a simple touch
to be known
an embrace to scrape a spark
a tender word to soak my ears
a pair of eyes to awaken longing
gentle fingers to thread with mine
bonding tears

Sometimes I'm at peace
Sometimes I'm just numb
Sometimes I ache inside
unable to sate my lungs
I can clutch at my chest
howl at the moon
tie my hands to fists
harrow my dour mood

But alas, the only comfort to be found is within
And, at times, the effort is tremendous
I must exercise patience against my blazing heart
Which feels like utter madness
Asphyxiation of my ardor
Evisceration of eagerness
Smothering my writhing spirit
Endeavor of a masochist

Oh God, I need Your peace!
Calm the torrent of these raging seas!
Write my story how You see fit
and give me the strength to accept and endure it
to repose in peace and take hold of sleep
To breathe in
Breathe out
and say
so be it

First & foremost, this is a highly artful depiction of that howling madness that seizes us, often around midnight & not letting go until dawn. I love how you make this nightly torture seem beautiful, not gory. It's a backwards way to celebrate the pain that throws us into God's arms. Some say, "if God is all blah-blah-blah, then why so much suffering?" Your poem shows the slow excruciating surrender that can sometimes take a string of hard knocks to accomplish! Also, not taking this as a spiritual message, I can read it as the more mundane torture of that confounding earthly love journey with mere mortals. Further, this is a strong portrayal of the torturous strife in our country lately which sometimes seems like it will tear us all apart in many ways. Great writing! Love your complex & meaningful word choices, as well as other fun stuff like alliteration (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

And so shall it be and all shall be well- facing your glfears and inner demons is the only way to quieten the heart- know that the lies that make u feel this way have no strength or power over you you alone are in control- say it believe it live it- deep write 🌹
