Summertime in the Universe

Summertime in the Universe

A Poem by Daniel Affsprung
"

One of my current favorites

"

Because the night is cold and empty,

Cold, empty things make it their home.

Silence, blessed silence is the outcast.

The trees look in on the lights and warmth,

And are ashamed of their nudity.

The lonely night is to be avoided,

It moves arms close to the chest

And drives hands deeper into pockets.

Modesty is dead, silence is stupidity,

Loneliness is for the naked, ugly tree.

The window before me

Changing cold brittle branches to

Oceanside grass, gently caressed in a barefoot waltz

By a misguided summer wind.

Framed by a hole in the great foundation

Of our glorious falsehood,

Sin and fraudulence; the Social Night.

It leads a solitary mind to wonder

Just what glass this is, and why I kiss it

If only to show you that I can.

Any rain that falls tonight

Falls from a summer sky, even if it lands in snow.

It feels different, more and less significant together.

These drops fall from a sky that covers more than

Just this cold, lonely earth.
