Somebody Help!

Somebody Help!

A Poem by David Lewis Paget
"

The present plight of the earth gives one reason to pause...

"

The earth’s beginning to creak and groan

Like a rusty hinge in a country home
Or an ancient voice on the telephone,
That screeches " ‘Somebody, help!’

Too many people, somebody said,
Too much carbon, not enough bread,
Too much greed in the neighborhood,
But please " ‘Somebody, help!’

Trees are burning, the fields are dry
The sun is scorching the southern sky,
The ice is melting, so by and by
Won’t please " ‘Somebody help!’

The earth is cracking from rim to rim
While water drains from the river’s brim,
The smoke pours out ‘til the light grows dim,
Stand up! " ‘Somebody help!’

The rich get rich and the poor get poor
But nobody’s worried except Al Gore,
I wonder what God, in his wisdom saw "
‘Won’t Somebody " Somebody Help!’

1 of 1 people found this review constructive.

This little stroll through Earth's toxic wasteland is exactly the kind of prose the world needs right now; poignant anxiety about the state of the world, and that which seems to be continually ignored by all but ecological activists. So, two green thumbs way up for the social awareness behind this piece. Not bad, David. Probably not your best, but definitely not bad.
