God & The Moon

God & The Moon

A Poem by Chris Rampersad
"

A conversation between god and the moon.

"

High above the earth I glow,

Looking down and losing hope,

Humanity I look upon,

An existence that might make us frown,

Since they emerged I was watching them,

Looking to see why they brought so much pride in him,

Why they all made him smile,

I couldn't quite understand why,

They kill and take more than they need,

And throw away when they finish feed,

They fight for lands that were never theirs to begin with,

Creating destruction wherever they go,

They start off using their ideas for good,

Until someone twists it and makes it evil,

They always seem to be killing each other,

All for a bag of metal and paper,

They keep cutting down all the green of the land,

To replace it with stone boxes on black sand,

Black smoke rise to the sky,

Just looking at it burns my eye,

So I would turn to him and say,

"Why oh father would you let them all stay,"

He would turn to me a glint in his eye,

And pointed me to a spot on the earth with a smile,

There was a mother and father and child,

Who lived in a small house and slept in one bed,

They was not mad or sad or grumble,

They looked so peaceful and humble,

Though they did not have much they lived happily,

They had a love that shone beautifully,

He then pointed at another corner,

A man who held riches and great power,

Took time from every day,

To go see and help the unfortunate,

A few thousand miles from him,

A boy stands up to those bigger than him,

All to protect someone weaker than him,

Even though he was scared,

He stood his ground,

And valiantly protected his friend,

And there was a man who walked on the beach,

All by himself no shoes on his feet,

Taking up trash all by himself,

Asking no one for their help,

Sometimes someone will ask him why?

And he would chuckle and reply,

"I'm just doing what I can,

To preserve this beautiful land,"

"But your just one man," they would say,

"Can you make a difference that way?,"

And he would reply to them back,

I'm doing what I believe is right,

And at days end I will sleep soundly at night,

He did what he believed in,

No matter who may be against him,

I turned to him now, he still smiled,

He said "Humanity has so much bad,"

"They've done so much to make me sad,"

"But when I see their good side,

It fills me up with so much pride,"

"They are my children as is you,

And I've seen the beauty they can do,"

So I look upon the earth again,

Still a little disappointed,

But after my talk with him,

I no longer saw it the same,

The good and the bad may not be balanced,

But maybe in time... we'll just have to see.

Aside from some minor grammatical errors throughout, I feel that this is a beautiful, heart-touching reflection of the hope of mankind --- that there is enough good to outweigh the bad. In this day and age, the numbers on the bad side seem to outweigh the good; but unless one can see the whole, it's really hard to judge. It reminded me of those moments when someone does something good, and how it touches my heart and causes tears to rise in my eyes. In those moments, I believe that God would love us most.

The good shines bright while the bad bleeds shadows. Yes, there are many out only for themselves, willing to steal success from the pockets of others, but there are also those who give freely of themselves with no expectation of return. You question the balance, and rightly so, because depending on where we look the scales may tip one way or the other. We may never be able cleanse all black hearts, but we have to try.

Great poem, inspiring deep reflection. Well done :)

Thank you very much my friend. :)
This is a truly wonderful poem, you incorporate so many important and necessary ideas into the piece which show it to be and make yours a well-balanced viewpoint, a timely reminder to moaners like myself that there is much good which balances the scales to a degree.

He said "Humanity has so much bad,"
"They've done so much to make me sad,"
"But when I see their good side,
It fills me up with so much pride,"

Thanks Chris.
