Best Seat In The House

Sitting here at the kitchen table this morning

drinking the blackest of coffee letting the

most amazing cool breeze envelope me through

the back window I forget for a moment that I am

still in the city which for me is a love/ hate relationship.

Sun streaming through the screen wondering if this

should be my writing spot from now on........

As I let my senses wander, a flock of geese fly by

not seeing them... only hearing the sounds I let my mind

take over such a calmness  it is new to me.

The cat trying to decide if she would rather lay on my

keyboard or jump over me to the window sill for a game

of let me THINK I can catch the birds, yet she is to confined

                               AS AM I

Why do the geese fly south for the winter why do they run from

the breeze as I run into it letting me feel like there’s a chance.

I have so much to do and so little time yet I let it get away

getting distracted so easily even the sound of the street cleaner

out front has me jumping up to go see while I’m in the middle of

writing. So many sounds... the stir of a spoon from across the alley

someone else is hammering on the wall two doors down.

Trains tooting their horns while the birds chirp frantically fighting

over a crumb... the wind chimes from the front porch make their

musical appearance  right in the mist of the black cloud coming

from a speeding tractor trailer, today the best seat in the house

is the kitchen table where I draw my inspiration so I can actually hear

the words that I write in turn helping me to FEEL just that much more.

All the strange immediacy of every day. . .your attention a 360-degree field of openness. In that deepening crackle of ordinariness lies a mysterious Source. The Best Seat in the House is indeed where you always already are. Your poem encourages such simple sanctuary.

This was nice. I've spoken to a few of my friends who write, and a common thread in our discussions is how much they loathe their surroundings. No doubt the lack of peace they feel in their environment is what motivates them to write of other places and other worlds and other people - creating visions of what they'd rather see. I confess, I don't have much love for my neighbourhood; there's hardly anything pleasant to see. I wonder how my writing would change if I looked outside and didn't mind what I saw, not out of apathy but out of general contentment? Hmmm... food for thought. Nice work, Debbie.

A well penned journey in the life of Debbie from Philly. You've captured the true essence of your surroundings, along with your stance regarding a more savored chance at peace & tranquility within the city of brotherly love. Great work Debbie. A riveting read. :)

I like your style which puts splendor in what some might assume is everyday mutter..
it's great you can sift through it and find the right words,
not just the machinery of annoyances
diamond sparkles in the morning rough... one man's junk is another man's treasure... great piece

Thank you so much Jack... thats how I felt at the time... Im happy you felt it too :)
So much to relate too here. Some people enjoy the sounds of the city, not I. You made miss my cat of fourteen years who passed away last year. He would also get up and lay on my laptop. It was hard to make him leave because of our closeness. I enjoy my mornings when the wife is off to work and the only sounds from outside are the crows and the wind chimes, soothes the soul. This is an unique style of presentation. I enjoyed as it brought me into another's life to have their/your experience.

it's weird a year later and I open doors still looking for him.
There is just enough wild left in the cat to make her pretend she is a lion...

This piece is so detailed and engaging - I can imagine sitting at that table, coffee and city-sounds filling the senses... Very nicely penned, Debbie.

By the way - I think I heard those geese, too...

You've painted quite a clear picture of your morning here Debbie, I can almost smell that blackest coffee aroma...not being exactly where we want to be brings a lot of unrest even on the loveliest of mornings.
