Within Me

By: Destiny Glenn

Deep inside the heart,

Where no one can see;

Depression sticks, un-pliable.

You can try and try and try.

Every second, every minute, every hour;

There’s a darkness that follows.

It creeps and creeps and creeps.

Something you can’t out run.

For someone to approach me,

A wall of fear begins to form.

I dress it up,

So you would never know.

Just the thought of it

Shreds me to pieces.

Tears come and come,

They fall one by one.

Instantly, a smile appears.

It doesn’t go down,

Caused by a force.

Terrified to show

The real feelings within me;

The frown that should be upon.

But no, that can’t be done.

Now that I take this pin,

I feel somewhat relief;

To write the emotions

That deceives me.

My doors begin to close,

I’m suddenly locked in.

Because of my doing.

I have the key,

But too confused to use it.

I keep turning and turning,

Just won’t budge.

Now I’m trapped;

Because of my faults,

Because of my mistakes,

My past, including my present.

Holding all that in

Begins an earthquake.

The room shakes, shakes, and shakes;

Still can’t get out.

Feeling like I’m falling,

Falling from the sky.

No landing,

Just an eternal fall.

You would think

I would be un-cautious;

But yet I see,

My surroundings are quite clear.

Wishing a life,

In which I can love.

I will still continue to hold on;

Won’t let go.

This tiny little string,

That’s keeping me alive;

Holding me with my sorrow,

I become filled with fear,

Afraid it will break.

Now the fear outweighs the sadness.

Being legit,

I’m holding on for my life.

But yet, I open my eyes.

I keep them open,

Until my world dies.

Truly, lovely piece. "Instantly, a smile appears. It doesn’t go down, Caused by a force" I love this verse so much because it shows how tiresome faking it can be. " Terrified to show the real feelings within me" i so powerful because to be honest, we all are terrified. This is why we are here at this cafe writing about our true feeling so we won't be frown upon. The more I think of this piece the more I love it. N.

I absolutely loved this poem. I thought it was amazing how you used a scattered, somewhat unclear tone to convey an uneasy mindset. Depression can be tough, and you eloquently proved that with each vivid image in this poem. Great job.

You capture and express the emotions you feel very well. Suggestion would be to add more descriptive words to weave an imagery into each line. However, for those suffering with depression those swirling thoughts are often the case. Stay strong, keep writing and sharing

Very well written! You set words on the feelings a lot of people experience, and knowing that someone else is struggeling with the same can be helpfull to many. The structure on the poem is very good, and I like the fact that it does not ryhme to often.
