The Siren's Lullaby

The Siren's Lullaby

A Poem by Dianne S Penfold
"

A thrilling poem about a Sea Siren.

"
La La La oh she sings,
Her beautiful, delicate voice rings
and ripples across the waters pure
Luring seamen and sailors away from shore.

Her puckered lips, ruby and full
pursed in songs so wonderful,
the cool night breeze urges her on
and captures the rugged men until dawn.

They stare into her eyes so beautiful,
Enchanted in a moment so lustful,
Their ears yearn to listen to the Siren's call,
Deeper and deeper in love they fall.

But before the dawn rises she takes her fill
Stripping them of riches and even free will.
Their bodies now fragile taste sweet on her tongue,
This was her cruel plan all along.

Fresh blood now drips down her face,
A rush of ecstasy as her thoughts race.
Her tail reflecting the soft moon light
All sailors and seamen too bewitched to fight.

Hungry no longer, in deep ocean she goes
Where does she dwell? No one knows.
A wicked creature alluring in her own right,
Lays dormant while waiting for another night.

Dianne, the imagery you paint with your words is spectacular. Until later in the poem, I imagined a World War II era singer/performer in a seaside tavern, entertaining war-weary troops. Then the mermaid image became clear. It is thrilling, senses full engaged. A truly impressive write. I look forward to reading more of your work.

I don't why but this flow and rhymes reminds me Tom Bombadil song but it certainly does.

your quite welcome
I love this take on mermaids. It's really more like the original tale rather than the modern stories we see and read today. Sort of like Disney. The rhythm was flawless and expressed a mermaids actions so well. Good writing!

Wow this was gorgeously written. I love the story teller tone that evolves as you read along and it also paints the picture well of the siren luring in her dinner of men for the night. Very enjoyable read.
