Chapter 1: Awakening

Chapter 1: Awakening

A Chapter by Jessica Lima
"

Let me know your thoughts on this one???? I've been working on the story for a long time, but just now had the time to put it on paper. Fingers crossed!

"

For a long time, I had never spoken a word. It isn't that I had nothing to say, or was too lazy and spoiled to try; somehow I physically couldn't. Strangely enough, days before my eighteenth birthday I receive a note in the mail. I call it a note, because surely a piece of paper with two words on it couldn't be categorized as a letter. The paper was made out of bamboo, it smelled fresh like wet soil. The words Seeker/Destroyer seemed almost carved to the paper, which I held with both hands.

At first I thought it was a joke. If being mute wasn't punishment enough, the students at my school bullied me constantly. I wanted to scream so badly, yet something held me back. I gripped the paper with a lot more strength trying to rip it, the sharp edges cut my palms and the most amazing thing happened. My blood was absorbed by the bamboo paper and I could see its veins working, sucking my blood into them and thickening till it reached the words which began to glow.

Most people's first words are sweet like 'mom' and 'dad' mine were... well, not like that. I was in wonder, and pain, and confusion. All I could come up with was "What. The. F**k" followed by "No, no, no. Wake up, wake up d****t!" I would have been fine but I started hitting my head on the wall so hard I passed out. When I regained consciousness I was still under the impression it had all been a dream. That since I was waking up from something, it should be proof enough I had just had the weirdest dream. My head started to throb just then. Lifting a hand to the sorest spot I noticed grass covered a nasty wound. Carefully I started to peel off the grass leafs one by one.

"You don't like how I bandaged the wound mistress?"

The voice came unexpectedly, since I was sure I was alone. I passed out in my own front yard, the gate was closed and my guardian went to Brazil on vacation, leaving me behind to finish my last days of high school. I look around frantically. Surely I was not hearing voices!? I said a quick prayer, which caused the tiny voice to laugh.

"You can't see me yet, can you? Oh great, they have assigned me a defective Seeker. Let's hope you are a better Destroyer."

"What does the terms even mean?" I asked, getting more and more irritated.

"Your guardian has taught you nothing?" I hear a tiny sigh before it continues "A Seeker is a person who can see into the spiritual world. Either heaven or hell, sometimes even purgatory. Well, heaven and purgatory is allowed. Hell and purgatory is also allowed. However heaven and hell is impossible."

I sit up on my lawn and hug my knees to my chest "What's a destroyer?"

"Excellent question! While the Seeker can see the spirit world, the destroyer cannot. However, the Destroyer can enter the spirit world while the Seeker cannot. So usually a Seeker and a Destroyer join forces against the Rogues, the powerful beings that live in the spirit world but can possess humans for different reasons."

But I can do both?"

"That's yet to be determined. Your inability to see me raises a concern. At birth your human body was given two powerful traits that are only activated during adulthood. The reason you, and every other human child, or shell, chosen to host the traits are born mute is so that you can learn patience and to speak only the truth."

I couldn't wrap my head about all the information I had just been given. Whoever or whatever was talking to me must have noticed my state.

"I think that's enough for today mistress. Why don't you go inside and rest?"

I nodded, stood up, and started to make my way to the front door. Before turning the handle I thought to ask "What should I call you?"

"My name is Ether and I am your familiar assigned to you at birth. If you get into trouble, or have any more questions while I am not around just write my name in blood and I'll come to you at once."

This had definitely crossed a line for me. I would not be summoning Ether. Finally turning the handle I took off my shoes and made my way to the living room, it was time to call my guardian. This s**t was just too damn weird.

I thought this was really interesting! I just like fell into the story and enjoyed it throughly! She can see in heaven and hell? Wow that's really cool and creative!
Keep it up!
Also some grammar mistskes as well.
Like sometimes it was in past tense 'sat, asked,'
Then sometimes 'sit,'
Lol just some minor feedback for u to improve on :)
