What Does It Mean To Be A Writer?
By Dave Doc Rogers
20090117
[For a contest bearing the same name]

A moment in time captured in thought
A word, an emotion, a feeling sought.
A temperate anvil beating words wrought
Imagination's folly momentarily caught

Whither are we bound? Forested wood?
Boy under stair, turning bad for good?
One ring to rule them? Mystery brewed?
A lost car hunted. Friend crying, Dude!

What strikes the fancy to make one write?
To hunt for meter and rhythm tight?
Of structure and flow, continuous plight?
What does it mean making pains to write?

For some it is the expressive tone
For others it seems they are alone
For others they are picking at bone
For others still there are ideas sown

What does it mean to be a writer?
The weight of words to make one lighter?
The challenge of phrasing made tighter?
At the end, 'tis not pen made mightier?

You took all the words out of my mouth and crafted something beautiful with them. Great work, Doc. We writers are a neurotic bunch who consider too many things, but hey, don't we just love what we do?

Hope you have a great day ahead!

Regards,
Raven

it means everything to be a writer ..and what is greater than being a writer..
i am talking about real writers..the others i have nothing to do with ..wish them all the luck though..just to stay away from me
A writer would starve himself to see what is it like to be with out nothing..having nothing..
a writer would stay some few nights without sleep to see how is it like to stay awake..either to feel for those who are tortured this way..or he want to to torture himself to see what ideas it will make him feel..feel for these
He will feel for everyone ..try to put himself in place of the weakest ..the least fortunate so he can stand their stands to say what they try to say but cant..
they are not arrogant they are the most humble people..they will sacrifice themselves if it will make the world better
A writer will do everything to defend humanity for he feels its his obligation to do that ..and not to write great novels to get millions and others finger at his great talent ..this is the modern type of cheep writers no matter how many millions they got
a writer should starve ..wear the most ragged clothes..let his beard runs wild and ugly ..this will send his soul to be the most beautiful that feels for all..his inspiration runs wild all the time nobody will understand but those of real good mind..
what great write ..how inspiring

I wish some of the poets on this site would read this and get a clue that all poets don't fall into one category and are only allowed to behave or think in one way. We aren't all depressed nor are all happy. My poems run the range of whatever my emotions are a particular time. Just the same I do always try to employ some craft and skill in my writings because that is the kind of poet I am. Of course to some here striving for perfection means you lack credibility. It sounds like laziness to me along with the typical finger-pointing of those who can't agree to disagree, but have to put down others to feel superior or worthy of praise.

As always excellent work Doc. :)

Very good command Doc! Not many can do it well. I thought I was alone in the use of the old language...and style. WELL Done!!!

oh I did. I especially loved the nod to Tolkien but also appreciated the strong lyric flow of this piece, the end ryhmes, the alliteration, all solid. Knowing the great body of work you have as a thought provoking essayist - to see that your verse is just as good is a real pleasure, indeed.
