The Fiddler Of Père Lachaise

The Fiddler Of Père Lachaise

A Poem by Doodley
"

Undying Art.

"
Cloaked against the Gallic dusk,
Where air chills deep from salty brine,
He drifts along like scented musk,
Perfumed by winds off Mother Seine.

Through the haunting maze of Père Lachaise,
Along the avenues of cobblestone,
Where art still breathes and artisans lay,
In eternal rest from flesh to bone.

He walks the path of a billion feet,
A pilgrim of art with homage to pay,
To all those passed who can't rise to greet,
The birthing of light on each newborn day.

For here lies the remnants of masters of song,
Of writers and poets who breathed life on to page,
Of painters, sculptors and musicians of long,
Whose gifts they impart through the passing of age.

On a gentle rise he climbs upon a tomb,
The Stradivarius at hand he lifts to his chin,
As the audience sleeps hushed in their nightly cocoon,
And darkness enshrouds as cloud mist rolls in.

Steadfast Polaris illumes where he stands,
An effigy of calmness with head bowed to pray,
As the bow rises silently to rest against strands,
And with deft nimble fingers does he begin to play.

Mournful notes of beauty rise into the air,
To fall to hallowed ground merged with midnight dew,
To comfort all those gone before in a blanket of classical prayer,
A longing tune of sorrowful love for all the chosen few.

Into the depths of night does his toiling violin weep,
Purring sighs that caress the heart as soft as windswept cotton,
To ease the souls that now reside in halls of perpetual sleep,
And to remind them all their gifts of art shall never be forgotten.

When bloated sun spills first light and beams on sacred ground,
The fiddler fades in daylight haze to pass into the nether,
He leaves behind no mortal sign just notes of broken sound,
That glide upon the rising wind and float away as feather.

For he lived for love of undying art and undying shall he be,
Immortalized forevermore in memories that never fray,
Now the pilgrims come from all the Earth across the distant sea,
To hearken to the haunting tune of the Fiddler of Père Lachaise.

Just playing around with expanding meter.
Père Lachaise = Pair La-Shay.
Any comments are appreciated.

I am not a big fan of expanding meter, however, your style is superb and your placement of words in the stanza is pleasing to me. I felt present in your world. great job. I would have liked to have read your non-expanded version. It would have been even better in my opinion.

Whoa, this is amazing! it's not just the content of the poem that jumps out to the reader, but it is also the structure of your poetry, the beautiful rhymes, how smoothly it flows and other small details which you work upon while writing your poem. It had a spooky good tone...i loved it!

A very fine piece as expected from you. It is a touching write, a great tribute in a musical form for the unsung heroes of art. The thoughts that nobody would have, you always come out with them, Doodley.
