The Monster

The Monster

A Poem by Dressed in Poetry

The monster came
At the same time each night.
The monster came
When dark conquered light.
The monster came
Creeping, covered by gloom.
The monster came,
A creature from the tomb.

Every night, the little girl
Of no more than four
Hid under the bed
As it came through the door.
Every night, the little boy
Cried into the dust,
Unable to know
That his pain was unjust.

Yes, every night, the monster came,
Shielded from sight by dark and by flame.
Dusk after dusk, in shadow and shame
The monster entered to play its game.

No home was safe, nowhere secured,
For the monster entered in a way all obscured –
From within the depths of the innocent flask
The monster made the addict do its task.

This was a fantastic way to discribe the feelings and fears of children who have an alcoholic parent. The flow was perfect. I felt it allowed for the power of the moment to build untill the fear was at the most intense, when the allusion to alcoholism was made via the flask.

Great Intense Poem! Kudos!
