Sparrow

Sparrow

A Poem by Cheavel DeLuna
"

just a little something from the sparrows..

"

I spoke to Sparrow one afternoon,

asked him of the world,

“Sparrow are you satisfied?”

I asked, and Sparrow did reply.

“I roam the world

I eat from the sweep,

sit in the grass

and sleep in the trees.”

“Sparrow do you know of love?”

I asked, and Sparrow did reply.

“I know of the flowers

trees, and moss.

Hanging branches of willows,

and small drops of water, flowing togetherness

down to the bay.”

“Sparrow do you know of friendship?”

I asked, and Sparrow did reply.

“I know of air under feathers,

grass on my feet,

wind on my back

and dew on my wings.”

“Sparrow do you know of hate?”

I asked, and Sparrow did reply.

“I know of the crickets

that sing me to sleep,

of the chills that ruffles my feathers.

The warm summer air

as it flows through my throat,

and the light of the fireflies,

that burn through the dark.”

“Sparrow do you know of happiness?”

I asked, and Sparrow did reply.

“I know of the seeds

that fill my stomach.

And the drops from the river

that sooth my throat.”

“Sparrow do you know of sorrow?”

I asked, and Sparrow did reply.

“I know of the birds I am with

in the air.

And the one’s I am with on the grass.

Of the fish in the water,

and insects on trees.”

“Sparrow do you know of time?”

I asked, and Sparrow did reply.

“I know that I was

and I know that I am,

of when it is light,

and when light is nigh.

That there are things that have happened,

and things that not yet

have happened”

“Sparrow do you know your story?”

I asked, and Sparrow did reply.

“I know that I was not,

but then was, that I am

and will continue to be.

That eventually

I will not be.”

“Sparrow are you satisfied?”

I asked, and Sparrow tilted his head

and replied,

“Weren’t you listening?”

And he leaped

from his place on the windowsill, and

before he I flew off

he asked,

“Child, are you satisfied?”

Good flow. The worst thing I can say is "it needs to be broken into stanzas." which as criticism goes, is not that harsh.
