a little disaster

a little disaster

A Poem by Lizzie Madloch

own mind and perspiration on coffee.

notebooks full of ink sketches and poems

no fiction to be found here.

Welcome to the narrative.

You next to me,

about a thousand degrees.

I walk over with headphones on,

a baseline in my chest even though I know the way now.

I’m so much more than the smile I give.

Boy, I’ve written you so many odes.

Autumn days hiking up hot spots on my feet

and library afternoons.

Life can be so many things at once,

but I’ve only ever liked wearing one pair of shoes.

You’ve hooked me but stay caught on your own line.

Maybe she’s beautiful and jewels fall from her lips at you.

I can accept that, too.

I promise I’ll try harder to make love and not fall into it.

Tomorrow and tomorrow

and maybe the night before the next hike

will be different.

I suppose we can all feel like a little disaster sometimes, even when we're not.
