The Devil's Lullaby

The Devil's Lullaby

A Poem by Edmund Reilly
"

Hush little baby don't you cry, the devil's gonna sing you lullaby!

"

Once upon a time the clock was broken.

The night was cold and time was frozen.

On the altar books were open,

But sheets were white and words stolen,

Then I saw them,

All around me,

Standing tall but with no notion,

Smiling but with no emotion.

Next to my mother I stood in silence,

I pulled her hand hard,

She could not be woken.

I was scared and full of emotion,

Twisty notions.

They started singing in tongues I did not know.

My gaze fell upon the lonely palette on the floor,

It was dusty but full of words.

I picked it up and brought my pen,

I started to write, the ink was red,

It was the only colour I had that night,

When the clock broke and time stopped.

I wrote a story they called folly.

They said my lines were twisted and far from holy.

The devil was lurking in my body,

And darkness was taking over,

Slowly.

Repent! They said and broke my pen into pieces.

They took me away,

My mother cried.

I couldn’t explain,

I swear I tried.

I was afraid,

Breathing seemed hard.

They started to pray,

To lead me out the dark.

But I broke away and started running,

The devil in my head started laughing,

I could hear them, they were shouting,

They did not care, but were just feigning.

I kept running,

My face now teary.

Those faceless angels wore the same mask,

They looked the same,

Haughty and dreary.

All who were different,

They found eerie.

I rushed to my room and locked the door,

Closed the curtains and lied on the floor,

The devil came and sat right beside me,

He wore no mask and he too was lonely,

He held my hand and spoke kindly,

“Fear no more!”

So I closed my eyes and let my soul fly,

High into the dreams that I would live by,

The devil cried quietly on my side,

As I fell asleep,

To his lullaby ...

very dark piece, reminds me of some religions that talk a good game, but there is such insincerity, and they act like they so full godliness....but really don't care about other souls...it''s a show, a game...and then we resort to just ourselves..and the devil...no where to go.

This is awesome! Dark and melancholy but with a pseudo-sweet innocence of a child's point of view. Great job!

Hey edmund! quite a powerful poem here, I must say. As dark and twisted as it is, it's very realistic too.
Great work once again!

Totally agree with Bacchus.

This was rather cool. I feel the twisted-ness this portrays. & I love how it twists, yet does so in a way that it is not "poisonous." Awesome work.

Thank you for dropping by and thank you for your kind words.
When mothers can't be woken... we know we are in a nightmare of a place.
Such a striking line.

Thanks mate.
I don't know why creativity is stunted too often in children. A story is a story.
Anyhow, I enjoyed this little poetic tale.

The way you have woven this tale is commendable. The words seem to have taken my mind in a grip forcing me to read on till the end. Ultimately we cannot run away from the devil lurking within us.
