The Field of Rye

The Field of Rye

A Poem by Edmund Reilly
"

In a field of rye there is a boy with a broken toy and this poem is his story!

"

There was a boy,

He was four,

He sat in a corner with a broken toy.

He watched them fight,

In fright,

He looked away and tried not to cry.

He closed his eyes,

He started to fly,

To a field of rye under a clear sky.

They shouted loud,

But he heard a song,

His eyes twinkled and he sang along.

The fiddler played,

He danced around,

In the field of rye that he had just found.

Then he met her eyes,

They were green,

Her name was joy and her face was serene.

They laughed and played,

Glasses broke,

Plates were thrown and she told him a joke.

The fiddler played,

The horizon was red,

They walked together off into the sunset.

His Father came,

Shook him awake,

He opened his eyes and smiled on his day.

His father was crying,

His mother was fading,

He sat in a corner and he was just waiting.

For night to come,

And take him away,

So he could be with Joy,

 In the field of rye...

here you have created a visualization which is just beautiful..though the boy knows that the real life in front of him which he can not change but at least expects for a dream where he can get the blessings from the fresh air and live the life in a true sense..
A very progressive words with sweet rhythm ...

You masterfully took the reader into that boy's world, you made the reader forget his broken world and play with Joy and the boy who didn't need that broken toy while he had that imagination of his. Bravo this is one of those poems which left a wonderful feeling of joy while reading. Clap...Clap....Clap.

This is great. All of us seem to spice up reality in our own way. I think that is one of the hallmarks of existence. Thanks for sharing this piece, Edmumd.

The poem is encompassed with beauty of dreams, I am left so happy and pleasant reading. I love how it creates a distinction between escape and reality in start and end, coping, it's always difficult but pleasant when done with imagination. Lovely read! :)

Thank you for dropping by and thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed this poem.
Hm. Beautiful and well-structured. As pleasant as the imagery is, I can't help but to feel however. I admire the boy's strength and tenacity, his survival tactics, but I can't help but to feel sorry for him as well. Emotional and gripping piece here. Excellent.

This is such a beautiful poem, actually gave me shivers. Your rhyme scheme is well written and adds a sensitive dramatic touch.
Very beautiful x

poor child, and the fighting is a reality for many children. They all should have the ability to escape it, if only to dream. You can really feel the beauty of what he created. lovely poem.

It's so beautiful. Very apt description of a daydreamer, escapist syndrome.
Thanks for sharing this poem :)

Beautiful symphony of words. A very sad story in fact. I wonder if such story existed in reality what would be the feelings of this little boy. Well written and flow of poem was impressive.

A sad story of a child listening to his parents fight but I love that he was able to look past the bad and see something good - what strength of character for a four year old. Really great imagery with this - well done :)
