The Light

The Light

A Poem by Theo Ratcliffe

Have you ever really thought about the world?

Why the earth spins?

Why we have night and day?

Why there's sixty seconds in a minute? Sixty minutes in a hour, but only twenty-four hours in a day?

Why are we born, and why do we die?

Why can’t I reach the light?

The light that lies at the end of the tunnel.

The tunnel that lies ahead of me.

The light that only I can see.

The light that gets further with each step I take.

The light I can never reach.

Why can’t I reach it?

That light that lies ahead.

Why does it leave me in the dark?

Why is it there? What is your purpose?

My purpose.

My purpose for what?

Life, death.

To see the sun set but never rise.

To shed tears, but feel no pain.

To hind behind an ugly mask.

To breathe but never to live.

To think about the world, but never reach the light.
