I Can Hear You Smile.

For my brother.

When we're on the phone, ya we do that still 

I can hear you smile, I can tell 

It's in the way the silence sits 

In between us. It's the coolest s**t. 

I know you're getting ready to make a joke

You're gonna be funny and I'm really stoked 

so I start to smile, I start to grin 

I can't wait for your words 

then we'll begin 

to laugh together about the funny thing 

and somewhere way back inside my head 

I'll be glad I know you 

glad we're friends.

The best time though 

when I can hear you smile 

is when we're saying goodbye 

when it's been awhile 

we both know we'll talk again 

but it might not be for months on end 

so I'll say bye, cause I'm always shy 

about saying I love you, even though I do 

but you come back and save the day 

first I hear you smile, then I hear you say 

"I love ya" and maybe some other things 

then I say it back and we both say bye 

and I wonder if you heard me smile that time.

I could relate to this so much. I guess everyone can, at some point. I really loved the concept of 'hearing' a smile, I guess it's specially relevant in today's context, where a phone conversation is crucial to relationships, and in some cases (like the one in the poem) it is maintained mostly through phone. I guess it stresses on the importance of things left unsaid, and all in all, it had such a sweet, homey feel to it.
