I Saw the Dalai Lama Today

by peter green

I saw the Dalai Lama today

He was at the YMCA

I saw him in the hallway

Coming out of the Mens Washroom

It’s the door with the picture of the man

The other door has the picture of the woman

Somehow we know this

But I digress

We passed through the door

Dalai Lama going out

I was going in

His head was shaved

Dressed in dangling robes

Shining shimmering gold and silver

I was in black gym shorts

Nikes I think

And an Adidas Shirt

It was red

I felt cool

He looked at me the

Dalai Lama

And smiled

I smiled back

Ah, you must worship your body

You make it strong and healthy

You strengthen your heart your lungs

You run you swim you jump you lift heavy objects

Your body changes shape

like a sculpture in progress

His hands folded together    tilted head     eyes smiling

You are very dedicated

He continued on

I stood at the urinal

Thinking about the Dalai Lama

In the bathroom like a regular guy

I gave both heads a shake

But he is a regular guy

No

He is the Dalai Lama

He is above regular

He is beyond regular

That look he gave me

The Dalai Lama

Smiling eyes     tilted head

I had to find the Dalai Lama!

The YMCA is large

Its hard to find anyone

Even the Dalai Lama

He wasn’t pumping iron in the weight room

He wasn’t spinning in a spinning class

He wasn’t running on a tread mill

He wasn’t crunching on an exercise ball

I had lost the Dalai Lama

I walked past the quiet studio

Hardwood floors blonde and shiny

Dim lights

A shaved head

Sparkled garments

Alone

Silence

Breathing true and deep

I had found the Dalai Lama

I took a step in….

Ah..come in    I have been waiting

You must have looked everywhere

Are you finished worshiping your body?

Come sit with me

Breathe in the silence

Exhale the noise of life

Release the pain you have within

Shed a tear if you must

But don’t forget the joy and pleasure of your love

On the hardwood floor

Sat I and the

Dalai Lama

We took a breath

In

We took a breath

Out

The floor released beneath

Below

darkness

deep

empty

I wasn’t afraid

I had found my centre

And energy flowed

Love suspended me

Whimsy and beauty, mundane chatter and depth all in one little piece of poetry. I love this. It's wholly different than most of what I've read lately. Crafty, witty, and nicely penned art. Thank you very much for sharing.
