Afterlife

Afterlife

A Poem by Eron Culver

We all die, but what if that's just it?
We all die, and that's all that happens.
We live, die, and then there's nothing else.

What if all of this...
This horrifically gorgeous life has been leading all up to nothing.
A permanent darkness that we are not even conscious of,
because we are no longer anything-
not even a lost spirit floating in the breeze.
Can such an action packed show really close with such a dull and final sentence?

Most likely, that's all there is after life: nothing.
Just as we seek nothing in life, it is what binds us all in death
A deluded hope that there's clouds and sunshine to fill our eyes after they've closed,
only for us to discover that we are no longer existent anymore,
that we will not ever know because we won't even exist to discover the nothingness-
engraved, signed, and destined for us all.

Once we're done, we're done.
What if it was all as simple as that?
Life would be an iron b***h like that in the end.

Your piece entices perfect emotions of dread at the unknown conclusion of life and the dismay at the possibility of an afterlife that is non-existent.
Having said that, it was a fun read, regardless of the dark themes behind it. It kept me hooked until the bitter end. Describing that life is a wonderful beauty of vibrant color compared to an endless abyss of eternal black that awaits us. The final line really takes the cake and seals the deal of how one feels grasping at this cold truth. How s****y it is to never experience this world again and to float among the cold, unfeeling, darkness forever and blaming life as a cruel b***h who understands this from the moment of our creation by still sends us on this journey with death as the only destination.
An absolute pleasure to read, though I'm sure you know this. Please keep up the good work and continue to bring bittersweet emotion to your pieces.
