Friends? Yes, we are until I became more aware of you.

I know I am just a friend

I did my very best and tried

Your smile became something to look forward

My actions when with you became awkward

I’m afraid things with us will end

So don’t bother looking for me

Distancing self seems to be a lie

I know you’ll never be mine

A lot of tears had been shed

The insides started to die

It is me that betrayed our friendship

It is me who truly love you

Did regret pushing you away

Now in pain, I wish I stayed

To have you again, can’t find a way

Feelings for you won’t easily sway

such intense and clear words to express a rather intricate feeling!
the poem focuses a lot on that heart-breaking feeling that un-happy lover well know, that overwhelming void that grows and destroy everything else. what is more appreciable in the poem is both the simplicity of the words and the naivety of the rhymes. unfortunately that is also its weakpoint: the sensation of emptyness is so strong that no other feeling can be perceived.

I humbly forward you jus one suggestion:
you may remove 'with' from the verse 'My actions when with you became awkward': without spoiling the poem, you'll make it easier to read.

in short, I find your poem intense but still perfectible.
