Wake Up

Wake Up

A Poem by Evakyl
"

A short poem that starts sweet and ends badly. Inspired partly by Doki Doki Literature Club.

"

"Wake up." my mother says gently every morning of my childhood.

"Wake up." my middle school teacher says affectionately every first period.

"Wake up," I whisper to myself, urging myself to get out of bed

"Wake up." my first boyfriend says as he walks away.

"Wake up!" my father shouts as he yanks my sketchbook away.

"Wake up." my high school teacher says as he crushes my dreams.

"Wake up." I silently beg myself, wondering why I even should.

"Wake up!" my mother cries desperately as my vision fades,

But I took enough to make sure I never would...

Note: I'm not suicidal. I just have a dark mind on occasion. Dedicated to my niece who helped me wordsmith the poem. Feedback and thoughts are much appreciated.

Wow! The last two lines! They almost take the reader's breath away. Though the poem is a bit dark at the beginning, the main theme seems to be a youthful indifference and some self-doubt or self-loathing.

But, I didn't the see the depth of the pain until the last two lines. And, I expect that's what happens in reality. Because rarely do we say, "Yeah, I'm not surprised he/she committed suicide." We just never want to believe it. Nice job "waking up" the readers. Impressive work.
