Distractions

Distractions

A Poem by DrD

Your thoughts take you away from me

To places I think I need to fear

And a cough, changing channels, nothing

Returns you to my arms

In time your mind moves back to your face

And you force a smile like an apology

And pretend that all is well

That who we are is who we will always be

In other times you would press against me

Your legs folded beneath you on the sofa

The radiator rattled and hissed

And we could not hear the television

So we stayed together beneath wool blankets

With the heat turned off and our arms knitted

And believed we were favored among all people

Because we were simply there --- together

But now your trances travel to distant places

Where I have never been and am not welcome

And even though you are a touch away

I miss you

I sense danger in your distractions

And my fears possess me like dreaded demons

Because you are the greater part of me

And if you go, I will miss me, too

Such beautifully expressed concern with the private thoughts of another. Your second verse leads wonderfully into the disparity evident in the third verse where you depict how our experience of oneness with another either allows us to remain very much our own person or not (as is evident here) in what I can only describe as a sort separation anxiety. Your words are artfully emotive DrD

I wonder how it is that something that was once the ultimate of everything can slowly digress and fade into something less than a shred of what could be thought of as a single thread of hope at best...

...distractions, stress, lack of communication, commitment, the list goes on and on...

One never really fully knows.

you know, i'm not going to analyze or pick apart this one. labels just don't matter here. i can't tell you how many times i have indulged the same feelings and concerns within a relationship, without rambling , so, let me just state quite plainly: i could not have written a better version of this clever and fulfilling write.

Thank you Quinfinn, I appreciate your comments and your visit. Please return.
oh my, i have experienced this...when things start losing their edge between two people...what used to be a distraction, tuned out for romance and talking..is now the focus, so that the two people don't have to interact.

the distance grows, and sometimes it seems once that starts happening...the relationship is doomed...there is no turning back...no getting back "the way we were"--

this is well expressed.
