beat-in

beat-in

A Poem by John Destalo

it came upon me

so fast

no warning

like a

sandstorm

surrounding

me

fifty fingers

clenched

pummeling

me

ribs crack

like ribbon

candy

I hear

a gurgling

of

thick

liquid

I hear

sucking

for tiny

puffs of

air

punctured

lungs leak

sssss

suffocating

I ask why

there is no answer

the mindless machine

has no reason

the world is turned

upside down

and I am the sun

trying to resist

an eclipse
