howl

howl

A Poem by John Destalo

there is a shade

a separation

that haunts me

a shade

that I won’t ever

share with you

I think the grass

is greener in me

I think

I am the other

side

I taste all colors

at once

as if they are

actually one

and then

rip them apart

with my cerebral

teeth

letting them roll

around in my mind

one at a time

they try to force

themselves

together into shapes

creating the aching

inside of me

until they gush

from my pores

onto a blank

canvas

I see a real

person separate

falling into pieces

I try to

put him back

together

two eyes on

one side

what does he see

when he looks at me

does he see me

as his master

or does he see me

as his obedient dog?
