I knew

I knew

A Poem by Farrah Grahm

I knew I knew when I let the tears fall as I sat in front of someone I loved
Thinking, there's nothing wrong with this leakage.
I had watched her cry, I'd held her, and stayed strong for her
Then I told her my story, and for the first time since I let that red rose
Fall six feet below
The smile I wore to remind myself I was still here above solid earth
Shook as my face shook, than fell away.

I knew that I truly knew when I nodded the thought into existence
That persistent thought that stays with me each and every day
When I think about how real my expiration date is
And how early theirs came
I didn't ask questions, I answered them.
I accepted it.

In front of a stranger, I let the elusive truth sink in
Two years later
And now, I know that I know
And the world still isn't over.

The death of someone close to us is something most of us can relate to. You included words of how close you were when this friend was alive making it more personal.
