Apron of Love

Apron of Love

A Poem by Fran Marie

My grandma wore an apron
made from old denim cloth
it didn't look like much
but held more than stains of broth

Oh sure she did a good share of cookin'
Soup beans and fine tastin' corn bread
and lots of home corn puddin'
around her old Kentucky homestead

Now Granny didn't take much to fancy recipes
she concocted up her own
puttin' in whatever she please
you always knew it woud be quite tasty and warm

And many spots ended upon her apron
tendin' crops, and from other chores as well
it became quite torn and worn
from many of youngster's cuts and scrapes
it bore stains from mercurochrome

Upon the demin's rough edge
though frayed, it felt so soft and warm
always room to wipe those tears
from our eyes when something went wrong

Though grandma has long been gone

and that old apron of love has seen its' days

it still contains the memories of

a strong woman, yet gentle in her loving ways

This is a truly beautiful poem, you really capture the homeliness and the nurturing character of your Nan. I think the setting is one we can all relate to - a Nan in the kitchen. My Nan was a great cook too, even though she did read recipes, she was always very experimental in her cooking, bringing in new things when they weren't accepted over here. It takes me back.

Nice flow of words. You make it sound as though you're telling a story. You're last stanza is truly touching. Great write!

It's a lovely image here that you've brewed up. Tidy up some grammatical errors here and there before voting begins and I'm sure it'll win the "Mothers" contest =)
