Leprechaun

*Leprechaun*

One day while strolling thru~
the green forest, I saw sitting
high in a tree,
A jolly green Leprechaun smiling
down at me

'I say ~ you up there in the tree
are you for real, or do my eyes deceive?

He sprang to his green feet and jumped to the ground
A short little fellow with a pot-belly-.round
He held in his hand a silver-corked flask
where upon my curiosity did ask

'What's in that Old Chap?
and yes,I wondered was I pressing my luck
With a gold-tooth impish grin and a nip and a tuck
With those irish-lit eyes winking he did reply

'Tis me merry Irish Whisky
I takes me a swig
and runs with the fairies who be dancin'and flyin'
among this forest of twigs
Then up in me tree 'til late afternoon
I be drinkin' and singin' me sweet irish tunes'

'Well, I'm sorry I asked, what was in that flask,
and to tell the truth
me thinks this be all balderdash!

You're just a michievous lil' elf, and at best ~lyin'
and a figment of my imagination~no denyin'
and I don't see any fairies dancin' or flyin''

'Oh me Dear~they're really here
and just as real as me
Tho~ they're a wee bit small
they appear to all
who are willin' to see'

'Oh I'm not sure you're real at all,
do you even have a name?'

'Of course Dearie, me name's O'leary
go on then and press me green cuff links'
on me ruffled shirt~ and you'll see
I'm real as can be'

I closed my eyes
and with a shaky hand reached for his shirt
but to my surprise, he disappeared
and on the ground I found in the dirt

A little velvet sack, tied with a green bow
inside I found three gold coins that glowed
and a note that read so~
'Tis Magic you know
what you may find
in life as you go
and as sure as me leprechaun
feet dance, my dearie,
you'll find your Pot'O'Gold'

Sincerly your's O'Leary.

I adore the fun and magic in your poem! My parents are from Ireland and said the wee Leprechauns are so much more cute and good looking than they are made out to be in the stores and on cards. How would they know? It could be a bunch of blarney! haha. This is very enjoyable and starts off my St. Patrick's Day right. Very well composed!

Incredible poem, it was alive with magic. The luck of the Irish i presume, Leprechauns are truly mistical creatures, and trixters. Thanks for entering this poem into my contest and good luck. May the luck of the irish remain in your sincere heart. Best of luck,
-Dana

What a delightful write for Saint Paddy's Day, Fran.
I love it...magical, mythical and musical. It fairly sings.
Your talent is awesome my friend.

I don't like St Patrick's Day. Never have! I think it has something to do with all the pinching. Where did this tradition come from? Ironically, I have a thing for leprechauns. More precisely, I have a thing for their gold. If I had a gold coin for every time a leprechaun has pinched me, I'd be ... well, I'd still be poor because there are no real leprechauns. Not that I've met, anyway. However, I once bartended at an Irish pub and many of of the customers swore that, after a few Guiness's they had seen one dancing on the bar.

Anyway, a very good poem. It reminded me one of of those old and beautifully illustrated St. Patty's Day greeting post cards.
