To Rhyme or Not

To Rhyme or Not

A Poem by Fran Marie

I get a kick out of writing
and the question is deciding
To Rhyme or Not?

yes,that is the question
asked a lot.

Is it poetry?
if you don't rhyme?
and if you have chose
the prose
Is it a crime?

Why Can't we just write what we
feel in our heart~
 in Rhyme or not
it all plays a part

It can be sexy, silly or bluesy sad
Slap-happy funny, or downright mad.
Pitifully painful or satisfying glad.

But whatever you choose to do
it's all poetry true and thru~

Some say it's rather silly
putting your thoughts down
but I think it really
quite sound and profound.

So why not give it a shot
with all you got.
whether or not
you choose to Rhyme

To never pick up the pen
and write ever again.
Now, that would be the real crime!

Thank you for writing this. I'm not sure how you intended it, but to me, it's about how more poets need to accept that if they rhyme and use meter, not every one will- or if they only write free verse, and hate end-rhyme, not everyone will. Yet we are all poets, and the people who like to bash one kind of poetry or another and praise only the other kind... they are fools in my eyes, to deny themselves of some wonderful words and thoughts others have to share, eloquently.
Very nicely put, Fran. Someone needed to say this, even if that is not what you intended it to say, but I like to think... it was intentional. You are just that kind of open, caring person who would accept it all.

It truly would be!
I say what your heart says.
Life surely doesn't rhyme! :)

I think you should be congratulated for using poetry to discuss poetry. This is a real sign that you are thinking about what you're writing.

I couldn't agree with you more. Rhyme is not necessary, nor does it represent all that is evil and wrong in the world. As Riverdance noted, poetry is about evoking one's thoughts and emotions. This is why there are so many styles of poetry. The true art of poetry is in finding the right style for each poem. If one writes about tragedy, it's obvious that free-verse would be better suited for the flow than, say, limerick poetry. Aside from that sort of comparison, I don't think the style really matters. Poetry is poetry is poetry is poetry. It's all about emotion, and nothing more.

Poetry is merely nothing more than thoughts and feelings in an artistic way. Not all paintings are realistic or abstract are they? They have between. Same with poetry. So many styles. Just depends on the mood.

Very lovely poem. I agree, thanks for writing this!
Good work.

Take care, and keep that pen poised!
