Living Hell

Living Hell

A Poem by Fran Marie

Life is just a living hell

    but I survived

         and learned it well

The sword in my hand

   burns for life's fiery glow

           a plight I understand

My strength will not pause

    nor tear one layer below

but I'll carry on with a cause

No one takes the wind from my sail

I'll stand up and hold my own

too many have tried only to fail

Fires and smoke don't bother me

      I've learned to exhale

                  actually, quite easily

yeah, yeah, I know you think me mad

but never have I seen more clearly

everyday surroundings bring news that's bad

Life is just a living hell

                          but I survived

                                 and learned it well

It seemed a little like the speaker in this piece was holding something back, maybe a scrap of wisdom of the others of her society. This aspect of the piece reminds me a little of W.H Auden's If I Could Tell You.

Overall this one shines best when the speaker talks of the sword in her hand, and I like that stanza most.

I have always been impressed by your subtle, effective and unforced rhyme and skillful presentation. It does feel somewhat restrained, like there's something in between

I love how poetic and well this poem flows. You did a great job in putting emotions into words and describes a strength I can't quiet explain. Over all a great joy to read.

You are welcome:)
Hello Fran, I had always admire them lady heroine like the
Ones you had beautifully depicted in here at the start and then
And then switch it to a modern-day Warrior Mom who has to
Face each duties and responsibilities as today's heroine!
Nicely done.

Everyone votes, so I guess I can review candidly.

Many thanks, E.G., for reading and for the review on my poetry..glad you enjoyed..
Nice one, Fran. Like the repeat of the first stanza at the end. Yes, some of us seem to survive and learn. Easy to tell who those people are when you meet them.

Best regards,

Rick

thanks so much, SpeedyH; for reading and reviewing my poetry;
The speaker in this poem seems very wise, like they have gained a new understanding of life and its trials. I like how you used the beginning stanza at the end, it really wraps the whole poem together. This is an amazing, powerful poem.
