Dependent Variable

Dependent Variable

A Story by Francis Orion

Turned off to his world, his mind becomes stuck in between the place he lived and the fantasy one he created. The rapid palpitations of his heart's emotional song signify his indifference. Remembering the promises he made to himself, he wouldn't bow or break this time. Yet, there he was on the cusp of no return. How could he be so dependent? He looked down sadly into the darkness. Thinking to himself, how ten minutes felt like an eternity. There it was again in his hands, he couldn't let it go, it was his escape from the mundane. With a deep remorse, yet a orgasmic feeling of relief, he powered on his iPhone.

This is precisely what I need just about now. Being dependent on the computer is so easy and addicting indeed.

I know right! Thanks for reading:)
We are so dependant on these things now, that if ever the power goes out or the net is switched off, you will see the worlds streets filled with zombies just tapping away with question mark eyebrows on and adults having temper tantrums. No work would ever be done again and we would all end up living back in caves.
Great twist as usual Francis.Superb.

You hit the nail on the head, which by the way, really hurts as truth often does but ... who or what will really be the victor especially when we get tired of the next best thing? ...Excellent quandary, excellent write.

I find it amazing how we've all become so dependent on machines to keep us occupied. I often wonder myself if I'm doing something unhealthy just by looking at my laptop every night. This story is sad. It relates the need for an escape from realism, possibly through contact with others in a way that could never have been imagined decades before.
