Shakespearean-ish Sonnet

Shakespearean-ish Sonnet

A Poem by Gaia Octavia

My heart grows cold within its lonely cell
No company is allowed to visit
Quiet as a bird who knows its cage well
Though unwilling to be content in it
Stretching its wings it gives a hearty thump
Looking out for someone to take hold of
Like a bird - too young - who is willing to jump
I must guard it from itself against love
I disguise its cell as a warm, safe nest
And fix it up all comfy and cozy
I set it down behind my weary breast
Now hidden from anyone who knows me
I remind it each time it starts to tweet
That a true lady's heart is always discreet

Not a bad effort, Gaia Octavia.
Your meter is off in this 'Shakespearean sonnet', but you've done fine in presenting the theme, overall. But for the structural hiccups, I liked what you had to say in your piece. You are like the great pretender, the silent sufferer, your own heart-jailed warden... Interesting stuff.

I'm revisiting you - because I see how you've reworked this poem since my first reading.
I liked it before, but you've done even better since then.
Reminds me of a song by Norah Jones, called 'Heart of Mine', where she implores her heart to
"...be still. You can play with fire, but you'll get the bill. Don't let yourself fall. Don't let yourself stumble..."
