Mommy, Where Are They?

Mommy, Where Are They?

A Poem by GamingGal
"

My attempt at innocence

"

Mommy, where is daddy?

Why isn’t he here?

With us?

There are monsters under my bed

And goblins in my closet

They try to eat me

When you tuck me in

And turn out the lights

I need daddy

To scare them away

Why did he leave after the crash?

Did the preacher lie

When he said daddy’s name

As they put the coffin in the ground?

Did the funeral scare him?

Is that why he hasn’t come back?

Mommy, where is sissy?

Why isn’t she here?

With us?

I don’t like this new girl

She looks like sissy

But doesn’t act like her

Or dress like her

Or talk like her

She has funny men over on weekends

And they tell me to be quiet

About them coming over

She says she needs money

But you give her money

Every time she asks for it

Is sissy lying?

Where is my real sissy?

Mommy, where are you?

Why aren’t you here?

With me?

You never come out of your room

Even though no one put you in time out

You make me breakfast, lunch, and dinner

And you tuck me in at night

But you don’t look happy

At night, when I’m scared

Of those monsters and goblins

I lay by your door

With my blanket and stuffed kitty

And I hear you crying

Every night

Over daddy and sissy

Mommy, why do you cry?

A very sad, but well written poem. I think you captured the sense of innocence very well.

This is an amazing poems that captures the child like innocent confusion over traumatic losses and deep and sad problems that children are not used to. Very real, deep, and sad. I loved it!

I think you did a wonderful job at prtraying the confusion and innocence of a child who has lost family members. So sad. Great poem.

How sad! You really know how to convey the confusion a child experiences at the death of a family member and the changes it forces onto the remaining members. This was heartrending and you expressed the shifts in the mother and sister into the child-like persoective of bewilderment and fear. The loss was sorrowfully felt and I commend you on the sad beauty of this piece. (And i finally figured out how to spell piece, haha.)

This really plucks at my heartstrings. It's so innocent, so bare and truthful. This was a truly enjoyable read.
