Desert ThirstA Poem by STEVE LAVERDIERE
Dessert Thirst A hot summer’s breeze
rolls swiftly across the desert sand Showing no mercy to anything or anybody in its path. It changes the deserts surface into a blinding, relentless
land. Harsh-, barren, and deserted. As the relentless sun beats upon the sands surface, heat
waves rise into the air Giving off the illusion of life’s sweet nectar- water, where
there is none. Slowly your tongue begins swell and all rational thoughts
seem to dissipate into a fog.
Hours seem like days, and days seem like months, Yet your sanity is lost somewhere in the sand, you keep
moving. This is how my life has been all these years, lost beyond
all comprehensibility, My sanity became lost in a whirlwind of memories best left
alone. Haunted by the things I’ve done as well as the many things I
have left undone. Like the desert, barren of all feeling and emotion, all
comparable thought, Nothing seems real and all life seems fleeting. As I get older my body bargains feel like an old shoe; Worn out by my many travels throughout my life time and full
of holes. As I cross this barren sand, I pray for rain, an oasis, or
cactus So that I may drink of its bittersweet nectar. As I walk alone in this wasteland, my mind is slowly
slipping away
All that is left is the thirst. Longing for something real
and tangible, For life and love, for forgiveness and compassion and for
trust and understanding, Yet I stand alone on the shores of despair with only
memories of the deserts burning desire to swallow all that I am and take from
me my humanity.
