I Just Want to Be There

They promised me...

I would be there to meet my new uncle

I would be there for their wedding

I would be there to be their flower girl

I wanted to be there...

To soothe my aunt after the divorce

To congratulate her on her new marriage

To be the bride's maid

I wish I was there...

To see my cousin's first day in life

To carry him in my arms

To be his older sister

I am irritated...

That I can't be there to see my cousin grow

To see my family expand

To be a member of the family

I just want to be there

Author's Note

I have family who I barely ever get to see who live in a different continent. I feel like I'm never there with them unless I see pictures or talk to them on the phone. But I'm not really there, I'm just listening to what happened.

Totally relate to the poem bud! While absence does make the heart grow fonder & fun things of the sort, it really sucks when family is so far away and you don't get to experience all the crucial moments with them. It's succinct, to the point and filled with heart and soul. Awesomely done!

George, you have written a remarkable poem. Before I read the "Author's note" I understood it to be written by someone who was dying or who had just passed on, and was feeling badly that his/her demise came sooner than expected. But physical separation is painful for the living. I think your poem has wonderful substance and heart. Write on!
