Roots & Wings

Roots & Wings

A Poem by Gina
"

This is about depending on people but becoming independent throughout life.

"

Started out with dependence

With those who took care of me

and I was looking for acceptance.

Sometimes it’s hard to see

The person you strive to be

No one needs to disagree

There is no real guarantee

That I will be perfect

Or that the leaves will fall

off my family tree.

Life doesn’t depend on a conference call.

After all, aren’t you supposed to be content?

Don’t wonder where the money went

You need to represent

Someone who is

Self-reliant

The silence is in your favor

Let them see you be vibrant

They need inspiring.

You have to get through

Days, weeks, years…

So they have that trust in you.

You’ll end your deepest fears

It’ll will be worth it

So happy, no more tears

Don’t worry, you’ll benefit.

It’s true.

You know who you are

No one needs to help you with that

I wished upon a star

That you wouldn’t be too far

And you weren’t.

You were waiting to come out

And fly.

It turned out

to be something beautiful

Questioned why you didn’t before

They sang you a lullaby

And taught you how to standby

Throughout something difficult

But not difficult enough

Because it ended with a miracle.

You began grounded with roots

And strengthened those attributes

That made you open up.

Age doesn’t matter, maturity does

You could be old and never grow up

But that’s what wings are for right?

You flew and earned this life.
