Autumn all Year Long

Autumn all Year Long

A Poem by Girl Friday (Sarah W.)

Seasons come and go like visitors

never truly unpacking their bags --

Summer is dressed in the same shift until

she bids farewell, as a relative departing

            after a holiday meal.

Perhaps this is why I never feel the rhythm

of the world around me, as it sparks

like a hammer striking an anvil, raining

red stars that burn out before

            they reach the ground.

Give me Autumn all year long,

draped in rust reds and burnt oranges,

scented by harvested pumpkin and a hint

of pine sap lingering on the periphery,

            like an ancient watermark.

Oh, for my closet to be ever filled

with pea coats and knitted scarves,

for my cook-top to know the constant company

of deep pans and candy thermometers!

The Maple beyond my window is changing,

the tips of her leaves are beginning to ripen,

and when she turns I will plead with her to remain,

for I cannot stomach her Winter nakedness,

nor the need for another empty transition

into a different state of mind.

Autumn is amazing, all the beautiful colours on the trees. This is a stunning piece, you write elegantly, Sarah - I love the way you've structured this one. It makes such an impact. You know I love you and your writes, amazing as always.

Thank you so very much, sweet Noodle!
Beautifully put and I agree that fall is the season for me. It might afford an extra layer or two from time to time but it seems more peaceful and the air less heavy, the ground becomes as crisp as the taking of a breath as you marvel at the calico colors of the trees. I wonder at a couple of things in this one though. Why you say that you never really feel the rhythm, yet in the final part you are pleading for fall to remain. It would seem that the rhythm of the changing season is felt greatly. The second thing is, what is a candy thermometer?

Autumn seems so unfair for southerners, but for us that get to share in the changes, it can be quite the emotional rollercoaster. beautiful poem. Trace

Thank you so much, Trace.
It's the time of year my crock-pot gets the most business! There's nothing like it...boots with jeans, sweaters, and long scarfs....yeah!!

You make me yearn for home, Sarah...the sentiment peeks through your every line and touches the heart of this east coast home-town girl!

Glad so many people are as in love with Autumn as I am!
There is nothing on earth like Autumn. It makes you feel alive! I just soaked in these words for a while:

Give me Autumn all year long,
draped in rust reds and burnt oranges,
scented by harvested pumpkin and a hint
of pine sap lingering on the periphery,
like an ancient watermark.

My favorite place to visit in Autumn is Queeche Gorge in Vermont. You make me want to go there now.

So glad you liked this one!
Even thinking about how fast years pass by is depressing. It's funny because when I was a child days would go by quickly and years slowly. Now some days seem to drag on and years go by in a blur.
