Dinner for One

Dinner for One

A Poem by Girl Friday (Sarah W.)

the water is boiling     pasta swims

beneath sparingly salted eruptions,

as I uncork the wine     tonight Merlot

splashes into a curved top Bordeaux

the table is set     one plate, one fork,

one wax steeple with a tongue of fire,

and I wait     wait for the sauce to simmer,

a dinner for one nearly done     again

you linger in the scent of marinara      still

haunting a kitchen we built as lovers,

and this table keeps memories beyond food,

my hands remember as I lightly stroke the grain

This feeling, loneliness touches me through your words. Painful memories thought to have been stored away in plastic containers with bright red lids, locked down tight and placed in the farthest reaches of the sub zero, behind the marichino cheeries and the spanish olives, still finds it way back into our thoughts as we sit in silence, wishing this meal were over. You express this sadness in real terms, as if any of us could be sitting at that table, picking at our plates, just searching for some little hint of an appetite.

Very well done Sarah.

At least you're going to the trouble of cooking a dinner for one, most people wouldn't bother. I like Merlot, but prefer Rioja.

Thank you, my friend :)
At least there's wine. A very relatable theme. Beauty and comfort are better when shared.

That's true...wine can help in times like these :) Thank you!
Wow, this is extraordinary...from the "sparingly salted eruptions" of pasta, to the "wax steeple with a tongue of fire". It's incredible how food can rewind a place and time in our hearts, and hold it in a forever moment.

This is a must for my library. The presentation is perfect... I love it, Sarah!

Humbled you liked this one so much, Kelly!
Excellent stimulation of the senses. My girlfriend is a vegetarian, so we definitely have a lot of variations of pasta haha. Those final lines bring up a sense of longing as well. Nice work Sarah!

Thank you, Jacob...it always seems as though cooking pasta floods my brain with the past.
To remember a lost love and put it into words that truly touch a persons heart shows great talent. And you my friend are amazing. This is one of those poems that just curled right up in my heart and will stay there...
