We're Not Here at the Moment

We're Not Here at the Moment

A Poem by Nicholas Duboe
"

I had wrote a poem called Voicemails that was a happy love poem and I wanted to contrast it with a sad version of the same sort of concept. Enjoy!

"

We're Not Here at the Moment

It's been six months now but your voice is still the answering machine on my phone,

though the only messages I have are you asking me change it and to leave you alone.

Look, I know you said it's over and my house is quiet and empty of all of your things,

But changing my voicemail is getting rid of the last part of you I have that still remains.

I can hear you say that we're not here at the moment and to leave a message after the beep.

Then at night when it gets to hard to take, I call myself repeatedly until I fall asleep.

"We're not here at the moment…"

"We're not here at the moment…"

"We're not here at the moment…"

Thats all I can ever pay attention to.

And after a few hours I drift away dreaming of days filled with nothing but you.

All I have left is your voice and I'll stop calling you if I have to but please don't make me delete it. Please don't make me move on.

Because I'd rather live my life miserably with a machine then face the fact that

"We're not here at the moment..."

actually means that you're gone.

I love the way your imagination works, pairing these two poems, contrasting points of view. Well done! Each poem has its own unique feel -- nothing like the other poem, but clearly they go together. I love the way you pay attention to your own true motives for the silly things we humans often do, making your writing very authentic & relatable (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

There's a certain ephemeral intent to convey beneath the words that comes through. The words lose their meanings and so it emerges.

Nice work Nicholas. The emotion of the entire piece is very precise. I love your command of words in conveying emotion. You've always done well in that area.

A couple of the lines feel a little clunky and over worded, but the message is still there.

Thanks for sharing this with us. I hope to read more from you soon.
