The Eternal City

The Eternal City

A Poem by Giulia King

"Come away with me, Rose"
She feels the warmth of a hand stretched out,
Caressing her shoulder.
"Let's forget about everything for a while."
"Where would we go?"
"Wherever your heart desires" the boy said.
"I imagine us on rooftops and visiting new places.
And us, always us."
Rose said with a smile on her face.
She was desperately trying to wipe away the tears rolling freely on her blushed cheeks.
"I imagine us drinking cheap red wine on a small street somewhere in Rome,
overlooking the great Colosseum" the boy answered.
"Oh, my love" Rose sighed, she close her eyes and started shaking.
She put her arms around her trying to hug all the broken pieces.
She whispered:
"How will I ever find you again?"
"You are the light of my life,
and my love for you reaches beyond the stars,
That's where you'll find me" the boy said.
Rose opened her eyes and saw beauty in the darkness.
"I'm consumed of thoughts of you.
You are a never ending book,
The pages to my story.
The home of my thoughts."
She said as she looked up at the starry sky.
Walking around in Rome at this hour is so peaceful,
Tranquility.
There is nobody around,
but, a great silence.

"We'll always have Rome"
she said at last and walked into the dark night.

"We'll always have Rome"

This stuck me as a someone looking at one last photograph of her love before packing it up in a box.

Love the quote too. Fitting. Cattullus

A tender farewell...

This gives off such a soothing effect while reading. There's a certain melancholic beauty emanating from this write. Mesmerizing too. As always, I love reading your pieces, Gullia x

This one made me think about 'Before Sunrise'....except of course with Rome as your background.

I imagine there would be nothing more romantic than to walk the streets of Rome at night with a lover by our side; taking in all the sights, sounds and smells and the sight of each other. Along with Paris, no place can swell the heart with love like Roma.

I enjoyed the piece. Very romantic and grand in emotion and reach. Nice work.

Lovers. Rome. Coliseum. Fountains. Wine. Love that reaches beyond the Stars. a teasing tale with all the ingredients of passionate bliss even if not meant to be. this one sets the stage so powerfully & deeply ...

"I hate and I love. Why do I do this, perhaps you ask.
I do not know, but I feel it happening and I am tortured." - Catullus 85

it's deep like the heart that penned this. you're welcome sis ... :)
A quote of note, (to some it is unknown)
leaves little of the yarn yet to be said.
You’ve told a tale (perhaps I should say shown)
that filled the Colosseum in my head

These few delightful words that you have penned
could have been thousands and filled up a book.
It gave us all the images to end
whatever lingering doubt. That’s all it took,

to mark our suspension of disbelief.
So many lines stand out, to let us see,
the phantom boy who offers her relief.
He’s in her mind, and has no need to be.

The rose you chose is wilted in despair.
This fancied trip to Rome will clear the air.
