Dear Cancer,

Dear Cancer,

A Poem by Holly Mason

         Dear Cancer,
Hello, I know we have met, but my name is Holly. I have a few questions to ask you.
First why did you pick me? Is it because I am a super great friend? Or you just happened
to be flying by one day and said "Oh she looks good". My second question is, do you have a
family? If you do, you should pay attention to them and you wouldn't be so lonely. Third
question is a bit loaded, is there any cure for you? I mean I think you could at least
give a clue. My fourth and final question...why do you exist? Just wondering. I have a
lot of life left in me and I am hoping you change your mind. If you find that you cannot
redo this deal, then I understand. I will let you know (ahead of time) that you have a
fight on your hands. I am coming out fists fully ready and I will not go down easy. You
can take your time or we can have a quick face to face. Your choice. I never said I
would lay down peacefully. You can write me back if you would like. I will even
enclose a pre-addressed pre-paid envelope. I think you have a lot of issues. Do not
mean to be rude but you picked this fight...not me.
                                                        Fighting like a fighter should,
                                                               your nemesis, Holly
P.S. before you pick on anyone else or even think you should....finish the fight with me.
I will be ready anytime ,anyplace , anywhere....leave other folks alone, you twit.
(twit is not what I want to say but I am not a great user of profanity) but you Cancer
are an a--hole. (just sayin')

This is so amazing. Glad I stopped by when it cropped up in related writing, which it is not, to mine. But I am glad it did anyway.

since 2008 I have lived. Sometimes I whisper the word "survivor" just as an emancipation of
silence. Because cancer, like survivor are forbidden words you dare not utter if probability
is still in the air. First the diagnosis that impaired me, then the chemo, then the work up
for a bone marrow transplant, then the transplant. Then six years later you pretend that
none of it happened. Then you try to get back some simblance of your previous, before cancer
life, but it has changed you. And what is sad is that only another victim of its dred is a person
who really understands.

Why it picked me, is the same answer as why it picks anyone off guard. Didn't drink or smoke,
ate a mostly vegan diet, exercised moderately, active in the community...even planted a garden.
But I believe, out of jealously, it picked me because of all of that.
I was able to overcome, knock on wood. But like being on a battlefield, or watching the space
shuttle take off, you never forget the experience.

Holly, you're far too nice a girl to say it, so I will. YOU CANCER ARE AN A*S-HOLE!

This is...powerful. My mom passed away from many sicknesses, one of them being a rare cancer. I truly hate cancer. Keep fighting and don't give up.

Thank you for sharing the poem. Some battle are fought alone. I know you need doctors and medicine. Cancer leave us with questions and anger. I like the way you faced the cancer and the good questions in the poem. I agree with the ending. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

A profound piece of writing, which will bring great solace and hope for so many who are unfortunate enough to be intruded upon by this unwelcome impostor! My best regards to you wonderful lady !

Wow... Holly, there is unspeakable strength in your words! I wish you all the best in your fight, I don't know what to say beyond that. This is the true reveal of a writer, profoundly inspiring!

A touching poem.Feels good to see your determination to fight cancer.I like the way you have asked cancer not to pick on anyone else before finishing the fight with you.
A well written piece
