The Proud 52

The Proud 52

A Poem by Kat Mandu
"

DISCLAIMER: This is not intended as an insult, this is my personal reaction.

"

Blind shepherds lead the sheep

Slaves to a land divided

A victory crumbled,

Two-sided.

Not really a win, if you ask me.

In a game such as this,

People insult, swear and piss,

Piss on sense,

Piss on sanity.

Who wanted this?

The proud fifty-two

Not me, perhaps you.

It’s private for a reason,

Stop asking,

Stop gasping

Stop grasping at straws

Your argument is flawed.

You knew it would be close but didn’t want to believe.

Now it’s happened and some still don’t see the deceit.

It’s so clear to tell,

Some brains are shot to hell,

Shot down, down by guns in a metaphor.

Pathetic,

Apathetic,

Almost psychotic.

We all chose, on that fated day

Now we see, in our own belated way

People everywhere have stupid things to say.

And now those in charge betray

Retract,

Step back.

The serfs dance like nothing has happened.

Caught up by the moment,

Deaf to the storm ahead.

Our leaders lie in coffins,

Their dreams are dead.

No plans for a new world ahead.

Independence, what does that mean?

Nothing to me on this day,

Yesterday we were free.

Our hearts lie heavy, captive today.

History had been forged,

The elite, opportunists gorge

On souls of the poor

The vulnerable,

The minorities are the ones who will suffer

Those without enough a buffer.

All they seem to be are pawns

And through this dark their anger spawns

Cruelty and hate.

Actions have consequences

Accept them or shut up.

But again, you will not listen.

Is this world worth saving?

I ask the atmosphere,

The all-knowing clouds.

Things are unclear.

We have been betrayed

By men revered.

Dig the graves of careers so carefully mapped out

They are dead,

There is no doubt.

People roar and shout.

Lonely and lost

Scared to step forward so we retreat.

Surrender to the elite.

Austerity still lives.

Racism beneath a thin mist.

Hatred is rife,

Some have risked limb and life

To be here

To escape a fear

We created.

The urban Neanderthal

Under a liar’s thrall

He has no free will at all.

All that is left to see and say

Is what will happen tomorrow,

On this historic, seismic day.

My personal reaction to the EU referendum results. As a British citizen who voted to stay in the EU I'm pretty annoyed by all of this so I've vented in a way I know how. I'd like to know opinions of the poem and the subject matter pretty please :)

I have to admit that I am personally not well-versed in this issue, so I cannot provide any commentary either way on it. However, your poem is an excellent expression of your emotions. There are many strong images and metaphors throughout, and while I don't always understand the subjects referenced, I can definitely feel the anger, fear, and frustration behind each of them, which is really the important part. This is a very emotionally-charged piece, written very well. Nice work, and I hope and pray that things will turn out as best they can.
