The Norm

The Norm

A Poem by Harper Tate

A woman’s place is in the kitchen,

That’s the 1960’s way.

I am just a life size doll.

Porcelain skin,
so pale and delicate.
my cheeks pink with blush.

Betty Boop wide eyes,
with eyelashes that reach the sky,

My tiny waist and garter’d legs.

I will cook for you.

I will clean for you.

I will sew for you.

I will bare your children.

I will keep myself for you.

I will make you coffee and breakfast each morning.

I will not complain.

Because you are my husband,

You provide for me,

You grant me a roof, and food to cook.

For you I do all of this because it is expected.

The old way. Wrong or right? Was good someone was home with children. New world. Both parent working. Kids raise themselves. I wish there was a middle ground. I liked the poem. Made me think this early morning. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
